REVIEW: Gory Blister - Skymorphosis Mascot Records, 2006
7.5/10
Gory Blister - Skymorphosis - cover art It has been many years since the Dutch progressively minded label Mascot Records indulged in the fine art of death metal but now they have at last decided to give Italy's veterans Gory Blister a push in the right direction. Even though this band has been alive since the early 90s they have lived a rather anonymous life thus far if you don't count in a 1996 EP called "Cognitive Sinergy" for Nosferatu Records and appearing on a Chinese (!) tribute album to Death. Their appearance on the tribute album was not really a coincidence as their technically precise and complex take on death metal has a lot in common with the pioneering works of Chuck Schuldiner (RIP) and, to a lesser degree, Atheist. It is tight, incredibly impressive from a purely instrumental viewpoint, and a healthy dose of energy driven thrash metal riffing will make sure that the headbanger that lives inside you is nurtured properly. The vocals are slightly off on a couple of occasions and their music can't be considered as groundbreaking today but nonetheless "Skymorphosis" should be a welcome addition to the record collection of any fan of technical death metal. The title track is awesome, by the way.
