The German band Grabnebelfürsten was
formed in 1998 and released their debut album through the German underground
distro Ketzer Productions in 2001. Ketzer used to be run by Alex Hehnle and
Christopher from Neodawn Productions / vinterriket but today Alex is doing
everything on his own. Their debut album offered some nice and powerful black
metal which was exciting and refreshing while still maintaining a strong
underground feeling and atmosphere. This is still the case with their second
recording but this time the act of surprise is gone and it feels as if the
band has not evolved very much since then. I have no problem with bands like
Bolt Thrower, Rhapsody and Darkthrone doing their own thing over and over
again but in those cases the new albums are almost always exciting despite the
similarity with the last release. This is unfortunately not the case with
"Dynastie..." which is still an album with moments to enjoy and treasure if
you are a fan of melodic yet extreme black metal. The German lyrics and spoken
samples will perhaps make the album less accessible to many potential fans all
over the world but if you want to discover one of the finest underground black
metal acts that Germany has to offer I suggest that you give
Grabnebelfürsten a chance. I wouldn't call this album a masterpiece and
I admit that I liked their debut a little better but they have found a style
of their own which is what it takes to be noticed in the ocean of bands
existing today. Stand-out tracks: "Der Letzte König Und Sein
Architekt", an epic song showing everything that I like about these Germans -
the aggression, the speed, the atmosphere and the wide range of vocals
used.
