Grave was one of
the big Swedish death metal bands in the late 80's and early 90's when the
scene flourished with great bands like Entombed, Dismember, Therion and
Unleashed just to mention a few. After six years of silence they have now
returned with the appropriately titled album "Back From The Grave" and they
are not only back from the grave but have also gone back to their roots. This
is brutal Stockholm death metal the way it was meant to be - without
compromise, heavy, extreme and massive. As it was time to resurrect the band
there was one new member to introduce since Jörgen Sandström joined
Entombed in 1995 as Grave was about to be put to sleep. The new bass player is
no other than former Therion member Fredrik Isaksson. I don't know what he
has been up to since he left Therion at about the same time as Grave disbanded
but apparently he still knows how to pick those four strings. "Back From The
Grave" starts out with the mandatory, to me rather pointless, dark and
ominous intro that every brutal death metal absolutely can't do without for
some reason. Then comes two crunchy and heavy death metal tracks before the
more mid-paced following of the album kicks in. The third track of the album,
"Behold The Flames", has a repeted riff in it which sounds almost exactly
like one from the debut album from the Dark Funeral side project Dominion
Caligula. Perhaps they have stolen that one, perhaps they just happened to
come up with it by coincidence, that is not up to me to decide. This is an
album that should appeal to any fans of the early Swedish brutal death metal
scene. It is a more than decent comeback from a band, the Sunlight sound is
evident and even though Grave have done nothing for the sake of innovation
this is definitely an album to sit back and enjoy. A classic band is finally
back from the grave. Stand-out tracks: "Rise", "No Regrets",
"Below".
