REVIEW: Grave Digger - Excalibur GUN Records, 1999
8.5/10
Grave Digger - Excalibur - cover art In the early days of their career Grave Digger were not much more than a second class Helloween but eventually they found their own style and became something special. Their music became heavier, more intense and the vocalist Chris "Max" Boltendahl has developed a very unique way of singing that makes him stand out as one of the most interesting power / heavy metal vocalists in the world together with names like Rolf Kasparek, Michael Kiske and Timo Kotipelto. "Excalibur" is their final album on the GUN label and as you may have guessed or already know this is a concept album about King Arthur and the knights of the round table. All the old legends can be found here, from the magics of Merlin to the tragic fate of Tristan and his love Isolde. Lancelot, Mordred, Pendragon and all the others are here to take you back in time to where legends were created. The album starts off with an instrumental medieval sounding intro that will get you in the right mood for the tales that are told in the rest of the tracks. "Excalibur" is certainly one of the most memorable releases from these German veterans who have been around since the year of my birth which happens to be 1980. I know, I am getting old... Nothing revolutionary but definitely an album worth the money if you like heavy and power metal in the vein of Iron Maiden or Helloween. Stand-out tracks: "Pendragon", "The Spell".
