Five years have passed since Swedish band Grave Flowers released their first album, and now I have on my hands their sophomore opus titled “Incarcerated Sorrows”, released through doom merchants Firebox Records. Grave Flowers have a quite friendly sound that tries to hook the listener from the very first song throughout this album. I wouldn´t be missing the point if I compare their music to Sentenced´s most melodic sound, for instance. Also Lake Of Tears´ “Crimson Cosmos” album and similar things come to mind when hearing “Incarcerated Sorrows”. Distorted, torn guitars weaving chords around Matte Andersson´s clean vocals (clearly reminiscent of Sentenced too). Bass guitar and drums setting the pace firmly without any extravagant movements. Nothing really intrincate, concentrating on the melodic side of the feelings this band wish to express. For melodic, emotional gothic metal is what this band is about, in a few words. One can´t say this or that thing from the album is wrong, but the overall impression lacks of something: originality. Everything here has been heard thousand times before, that´s all. Favourite songs of mine have been the opening track “At Night” (no, not The Cure cover...) and the nice tune “Fear Of Future”. “Incarcerated Sorrows” is not a bad album, certainly, but it´s nothing original at all. Songs are nice but that´s not enough to make a killer album. This album is just another correct effort, another melodic doom album on the list that won´t be a milestone of the genre whatsoever.
