If Burzum is the most controversial black metal horde ever, then Graveland
is surely second in the line for this title. But, while Burzum is dead
and last materials of Varg were crap then Graveland is still
alive and recording really good albums.
"Fire Of Awakening" is the new masterpiece of Graveland (now Darken's
solo project) and it's for sure better than the last of Darken's releases.
After the quite boring "Memory And Destiny" album, "Fire Of Awakening" is
a good comeback. The music is typical for the "new" Graveland - slow and medium rates, choirs, melodic, majestic parts of guitars, atmospheric
keyboards. The drums are simple, maybe even very simple. Somebody who has good knowledge in Graveland's albums can even hear the echoes of the "Thousand Swords" LP, but it's rather a weakness. I definitely prefer the times of "Creed Of Iron" and "Immortal Pride". The vocals are ehmmm... typical of Graveland. Somebody could love it, somebody could hate it. The harsh, blackish
voice of Darken was good in the black metal times, now it's mediocre. I think it's time to find someone who is a better singer than Darken. So, after all, it's quite an interesting and non boring (which is what is important) album of the underground legend and it's really worth buying.
