Here we have another German black metal band. I know there´s a lot of people around there thinking most of blacky bands from that country suck. They´re probably right but it´s perfectly logical due to the great amount of acts popping out there. Not to be forgotten I´m not against groundbreaking German acts such as Lunar Aurora, Secrets Of The Moon or Nagelfar; it´s simply I despise the trend and the materialistic inertia of the scene. Graven can´t be compared to the aforementioned high quality bands nor they´re cheap, unprofessional newcomers. Their weapons are simple and effective black metal tunes well done and convincing. This album comes enfolded under a clean sound and showing Darkthrone as the clear reference. All along the album Nocturno Culto´s spell is evident in the guitar lines and the vocal work. Anyway “The Shadows Eternal Call” is very listenable and entertaining and is far from being boring. The fact the album is quite short and the songs are wisely arranged with cold melodies every now and then makes the listening enjoyable, with mid tempos and fast parts alternating easily.
However, I couldn´t write this review understating the role of the cover art; it´s simply one of the most childish ones I´ve ever seen. Fortunately for us all, the music is far better in terms of quality so don´t let the horrible picture get you away from this competent album. Love at first sight isn´t anything applicable to the metal covers, you know. To sum it up: we´re before a rather correct black metal release without any adorns such as female vocals or synths, pure and raw as it´s meant to be the old school way.
