After listening to Graveworm’s “Engraved In Black” (2003), I come to this conclusion that still Graveworm’s best album is their 1999 masterpiece “As The Angel Reach The Beauty”. One of the significant features of this album is the arrangement of the songs. Altogether there are 9 tracks in this album and after every two track there is a beautiful instrumental track by keyboard (track 3), drums (track 6) and violin (track 9). The album starts and ends with a very brooding sound of violin, but between these violins there is lots of good music and great vocals. Stefano shifts between screaming and growling quite successfully and he matches his vocals completely with the music, as if this is the only way of singing those lyrics. The music of this album (and this band generally) can be defined as melodic black metal, which has a very dark atmosphere made by keyboards. And although there are undeniable similarities between this band and other melodic black metal bands such as Dimmu Borgir and Catamenia, but Graveworm’s music is quite original.
All in all the music of this album is quite good, but particularly its drumworks are fantastic and I felt very sad when this perfect drumming was not repeated in the later albums. The lyrics of this album are about night, darkness, and death. And one can hardly find traces of Satan in them, with the first lyric “A Dreaming Beauty” being the one best of its kind.
