REVIEW: Graveworm - Engraved In Black Nuclear Blast, 2003
7/10
Graveworm - Engraved In Black - cover art The Italian band Graveworm have already released three full-length albums and two mini albums through Serenades / Last Episode but will probably experience a further push in their career now that they have signed to the "mother company" Nuclear Blast. Their first work for their new label is entitled "Engraved In Black" and consists of the band's characteristic mid-paced to fast black metal with a gothic atmospheric touch added through the use of keyboards. No disrespect to any band but this is what I would like to label as Cradle Of Filth metal. Not only the music makes you think of Cradle but the vocals from Stefan Fiori are a little bit too obviously similar to those of Dani Filth. Even though he easily shifts from evil screeches to dark growls with a good result he does not have quite the same wide range and depth in his voice. Compared to Cradle Of Filth the music of Graveworm is generally less keyboard driven and more straight-forward. I hate referring to one and the same band all the time but when it is this obvious it's almost impossible not to. "Engraved In Black" is like any other Nuclear Blast release well played and professionally produced, this time by Andy Classen at his Stage One Studio but there is nothing here that really sticks out the tongue and challenges. There is however an epic bagpipe interlude included called "Thorns Of Desolation" which might make a few In Extremo fans happy. The album was originally meant to include a cover of REM s "Losing My Religion" but because of problems with the rights to that song they chose Pet Shop Boys' megahit "It's A Sin" instead (Japan version only). A competent album from a competent band but this should not appeal to anyone but fans of Cradle Of Filth.
