I was very impressed by the last album
from Green Carnation, "Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness", a concept album built
upon one single epic track lasting more than an hour. Now the time has come
for a new album on a new label. The Norwegians have left their old label
Prophecy Productions and signed a new deal with the French Season Of Mist. Yet
again Tchort is responsible for most of the music but the bass player Stein R.
have written two of the tracks and the vocalist Kjetil Nordhus contributes
with one of his own songs. What struck me when I had listened to this album a
couple of times was the fact that Green Carnation has become more versatile
but also more accessible and straight-forward. It is hard to say if this is a
good or bad thing in the long run but to me this album does not come off as
being as strong and solid as their previous release. The music is very nice
and melodic, the vocals are more varied and there is no major flaws within the
songs themselves but they have lost some of the atmosphere that was there
before. The lyrics are generally rather grey, covering subjects like religion,
despair, pain and suffering. One thing is for sure - this is not a joyful
happy album. Musically you might describe this album as a mixture of heavy
progressive rock and psychedelic doom metal. There are plenty of tempo
changes, there are piano tunes, heavy riffing and an appearance from the
Christiansand Chamber Ensemble. The most descriptive word suited for this
album is however 'psychedelic'. A good solid release but unfortunately it
doesn't quite make the same impression on me as their last album. Stand-out
tracks: "Crushed To Dust, "Into Deep",
"Rain".
