REVIEW: Greg Rapaport - Wyrd Self-financed, 2002
6.5/10
Greg Rapaport - Wyrd - cover art Greg Rapaport is a 35-year young man from New York who has a love for music in all forms and mostly of all rock and metal. Throughout the years he has been working on his guitar technique with inspiration from giants such as Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth and Jimmy Page. He has also recorded three solo projects, including this one with the weird title "Wyrd". Professionally recorded in his own home studio this album does not suffer from bad sound quality and it shows that he takes his music seriously which I give him credit for. It is not easy to be a solo musician in the world today. Some people will hate you for being a dive while others will critisize you for not being the next Satriani or Page. Greg Rapaport is not afraid to test his limits and he has actually found a very personal sound with this third album. "Wyrd" is completely instrumental and I think that is a wise choice because if you don't find a superb vocalist this kind of music is often spoiled that way. Rapaport stands firmly with one foot in he jazz / fusion arena while the other one feels more at home with crunchy progressive metal riffs. You may think that these two would not fit together very well but they do, at least for Greg Rapaport. If you are into passionate music, funky jazz / fusion, progressive metal or all of it I would advice you to give this young man a chance because this is a nice album. Nothing exceptional but a nice laid-back album suited as background music.
