REVIEW: Grief Of Emerald - Christian Termination Listenable Records, 2002
8/10
Grief Of Emerald - Christian Termination - cover art This is a great Swedish band with a hybrid sound blending old and New World influences. The guitar duo of Johnny and Jimmy shred away throughout the 10 tracks, going from a Swede-tinged Immolation feel on "The Almighty Is Rising" to Morbid Angel-like moments on "Scum Of The Earth" and "Deformed Imaginations". On keyboards, Robert blends in subtly, accenting melodies here and adding some atmosphere there. On the lyrical front, Grief Of Emerald generally stay within the Christian-bashing realms, bringing up the incipient fall of the Catholic church through its unnatural policies on celibacy and the resulting sexual derangements and perversions. "The Cause" is a superior song, featuring some destructive stop / start action, intense riffing, harmonic sweeps and off-beat snare work. Jonas is quite the drummer, possessing solid timing, a bad-ass blastbeat and an ear for technicality. His performance climaxes on "Those Who Bear The Mark", where he carries the band through some 7/8 time, then goes on to a nice quarter note / eighth note snare pattern before closing the track with some 16th notes on his ride combined with a hi-hat polyrhythm. Wonderful musicianship! Another good move by Listenable Records, and an album I highly recommend!! FAVORITE TRACKS: "The Cause", "Christian Termination", "Those Who Bear The Mark".
