REVIEW: Griffin - Lifeforce Massacre Records, 2005
7/10
Griffin - Lifeforce - cover art The Norwegian heavy metal merchants Griffin have recently put their 4th full-length album "Lifeforce" on the shelves of European record stores. So, let's take a closer look at what they have to offer the potential buyer. Impressive guitar solos. Check. A good clean vocalist. Check. Plenty of melodies and galloping riffs. Check. A powerful production courtesy of King Diamond guitarist Andy Larocque. Check. Griffin sounds somewhere inbetween the upbeat tempo of Whitesnake, the warm and soothing melancholy of Nightingale and the speed and epic scenery of modern power metal with a rougher edge where minor thrash metal influences are allowed to color the compositions. Few will be shocked by a shower of surprise while listening to their music but many fans of melodic metal in general should definitely appreciate "Lifeforce" as Griffin are trying hard to solidify a personality of their own. If anything, Griffin sounds very un-Norwegian. An above decent recording but I want to issue a warrant for even more intrigueing vocal patterns and memorable songs such as the excellent title track until next time.
