I didn't know that Poland could deliver some very traditional heavy metal bands. Indeed everybody knows the very famous polish death metal scene (Vader, Decapitated, Devilyn, The Yattering and many other excellent ones). The black metal polish scene is almost incarnated only by Behemoth (Graveland also in the past). But what about Polish heavy metal?? And I'm truly speaking about pure heavy metal and not about symphonic progressive blah blah metal obviously too present nowadays, at least in Europe. Because Grimlord is definitely no trend with Blood Runneth Over. It deals with 80's heavy metal. We're back to basics!
Of course, as it is often the case when this happens, the first thing you notice while listening to Blood Runneth Over is the "slight" influence of a small garage band called Iron Maiden for the few of you guys who may know them... But for what I know of this cult band, none of the melody you'll find on Blood Runneth Over is just a copy-and-paste riff. And that was the main fear I had at the beginning... So that's something I really appreciated, feeling that the band put some effort in the composition process because everything is pretty well done I have to say... Well, everything but the vocals, actually. But vocals are rather a matter of execution and not of composition and we'll dicuss this point in just a few seconds. Apart from this, the Maiden-ish touch we get everywhere leaves no space for really unexpected ideas, unfortunately. I recognized a kind of Ange feeling on the intro of "No Surrender!!!" but I guess 99% of you guys completely ignore this French 70's psychedelic rock'n roll band and I think so would the young musicians: I believe rather in a pure coincidence.
Back to the problem of the singing then... That's indeed the point I regret the most. And it's a very important one because it's so disturbing that I believe very few people will be able to go further than 2 or 3 songs. And actually you have to listen to Blood Runneth Over more than just once to say: "OK this is not completely shitty...." To make a more accurate comment, I will say that at least it is not always the right tone singing but the style isn't there either. Call it what you want: cheesy or whatever, the vocals just suck and this is it! And once again, it's just too bad for the instrumental performance which shows something interesting.
