REVIEW: Hades - DamNation Metal Blade Records, 2001
8/10
Hades - DamNation - cover art Hades is one of the older speed/thrash metal bands and released their debut "Resisting Success" already in 1987. With a split-up and a reunion behind them they are now back again with their sixth full-length album. You don´t have to worry about these middle-aged (in the music business that is...) Americans getting soft though because this is their heaviest release so far and with a new drum talent and powerful yet melodic vocals from Alan Tecchio (once a member of Watchtower as well) Hades is definitely one of the leading speed/thrash metal acts of today. This is a band with the guts to go against the nu-metal trend and also use a burning American flag as an album cover (very popular in Sweden at least...). Perhaps the lyrics are not as provocative as the cover implies but the music is at least great, catchy, thick, melodic, fast and most importantly heavy. The band is also very clear about the fact that "no lawyers, managers or cover songs were used in the making of this cd". I do not really know what´s so horrible about lawyers though, that was one of the career choices I was considering once upon a time. However, the result is a crushing metal album that will not leave the fans indifferent. "DamNation" was recorded and mixed in February 2001 at Big Blue Meenie and in Jersey City, NJ, produced by Tim Gilles.
