REVIEW: Haggard - Awaking The Centuries Drakkar Records, 2000
9.5/10
Haggard - Awaking The Centuries - cover art Haggard is a band that everyone should have heard of since they are among the best and most original metal bands in the world at the moment. The band hails out of Germany and consists of sixteen musicians playing guitars, drums, flutes, violins and almost every other instrument you can think. There are all sorts of vocals on the album - growling death, soprano, church choirs and many spoken interludes, all done in the best way possible even though the female vocals should have been used more extensively. From the start Haggard was a regular death metal band but now they have grown to be a huge symphonic metal orchestra with a death metal touch. Perhaps you could compare their development with the Swedish band Therion but still this doesn“t sound anywhere close to their music. Haggard has created a whole new style and with that they have broken new ground in the world of metal. If you haven“t got this album go buy it right away because this is one of the best metal releases ever! The only question I have asked myself is why make such short of an album... "Awaking The Centuries" was produced by Dieter Roth and he seems to have done his part of the job extremely well. The lyrics are stories from ancient times and written in german, english and latin.
