REVIEW: Halford - Crucible Metal-Is Records, 2002
8.5/10
Halford - Crucible - cover art Rob Halford is one of a few remaining legends in the metal world together with men like Ozzy Osbourne and Cliff Burton (well, he's not living but still...). For close to twenty years he was the vocalist of one of the greatest metal bands ever namely Judas Priest. In 1992 he left the band and later on he began a solo career by forming the band Halford with which he released the debut album "Resurrection" in 2001. After releasing a live album in between he has now finished the work on his second album with the new band entitled "Crucible". If you have ever listened to a Judas Priest pre-1992 album you probably either love or hate the vocals of Halford but most of you probably still agree with me that there is no other vocalist like him. Nowadays he doesn't only use this unique way of singing but also uses a more aggressive approach which actually makes him even more impressive as a vocalist. This second release from the band is once again a journey back to the roots of heavy metal with a heavy and quite simple groove running throughout all thirteen tracks. There is however a modern touch to the music and the fifth track "Handing Out Bullets" almost sounds like Machine Head at times. I would like to see the production focus lie more on the music and not the vocals next time but I guess that will never happen in the world we live in. As expected this is yet another wonderful high-quality release but no real unique masterpiece. Fans of the band will nevertheless go as wild as always about it. Stand-out tracks: "Hearts Of Darkness", "Heretic". The metal god is back again!
