It has been pretty much precisely two and half years now since we last heard new music from these Birmingham, Alabama based American guys. Back then they were playing metalcore with pretty basic metal riffs, both clean melodic vocals and metalcore screams and on top of this some more melancholic tunes. What they offer us now is metalcore with pretty basic metal riffing, both clean melodic vocals and hardcore screams and on top of this some more melancholic tunes. Did you catch the difference? No? Well, then you're right. Don't get me wrong though, I don't mind bands sticking to one and the same genre throughout their career, in fact most bands should probably do just that. However, "Mercury Lift" does nothing to touch me in any way which is what music has to do these days when I've been exposed to music day in and day out for several years. The clean angst-ridden vocals will surely appeal to a lot of kids in the American suburbs and also the Swedish suburbs as this kind of rockstar wannabe vocals have become quite popular these days. However, I think they are rather flat and boring. If you don't have a voice made for clean singing you should stay away from that. The hardcore screams do at least sound a little better but they don't impress me too much either. It's not a bad album at all but it lacks something in order to maintain the listener's interest. It might be of interest to mention that the Lamb Of God vocalist D. Randall Blythe can be heard in the song "A God Reclaims His Throne" (I guess that should be it but Century Media have obviously not decided on whether it should be Thrown, Thorne or whatever on this promo copy...). I do given them credit for the song titles which are something out of the ordinary but I doubt I will ever listen to this album again. If you are into nu-metal, hardcore or hardcore you might still want to give them a shot, especially if you don't trust my judgment.
