REVIEW: Hate Eternal - I, Monarch Earache Records, 2005
8.5/10
Hate Eternal - I, Monarch - cover art The third chapter in the Hate Eternal story marks quite an important milestone in the career of the band. Erik Rutan has now left his colleagues in Morbid Angel behind him to be able to focus on his own band full-time. I think it is a wise choice because while Morbid Angel seems to be standing still (not necessarily a bad thing though but it can be frustrating when not being a main song writer), he is truely developing his skills with each new Hate Eternal release. "I, Monarch" surpasses most other death metal releases of today with its extreme complexity, devastating riffs and intense guitar solos. Derek Roddy is one of the most impressive death metal drummers around and his skills are well suited for the massive, brutal sound wall that assaults the victim of a Hate Eternal album. The main focus of attention is however the remarkable guitar work of Mr. Rutan himself who once again proves himself to be one of the finer musicians found within the genre. "I, Monarch" is an insanely fast and technically complete album that will easily stand out as one of the top death metal releases this year. Rise up before the kings and bow!
