REVIEW: Hate Eternal - King Of All Kings Earache Records, 2002
8.5/10
Hate Eternal - King Of All Kings - cover art Erik Rutan is as we have come to learn a man of many talents and although he is a member of one of the biggest death metal bands in the world he still manages to find time for his own projects. I personally think that Alas is the most impressive of his other achievements but if you are a death metal fanatic I can understand that you would disagree with me. Hate Eternal anno 2002 consists of Rutan on guitars and vocals, Jared Anderson on bass and backing vocals and the drum-aholic Derek Roddy handling the sticks. If you listen to one of the early albums from Morbid Angel (Rutan was not with them back then but still...) and then put this one in the cd player you would have to prepare for a sonic shock. Hate Eternal is definitely not just a copy of Morbid Angel, what would be the point of playing in two bands who sound the same? They are similar in the aspect that both bands display high technical skills through their music. "King Of All Kings" is just over thirty minutes long but it will not offer you one single minute of peace and calm. The first time you approach this music you may only experience chaos and destruction but if you look closer you will notice that every riff and every drum beat is carefully planned the way a classical composer creates his opus. If you delve deeper into the compositions you can easily track Erik Rutan's characteristic sound. Even though Alas and Hate Eternal are completely different it is indeed possible to see the resemblances and trace them back to the main man himself. These guys are some of the finest metal musicians on the American continent and it is not difficult to understand why. If you are into intense, tight, grinding yet highly technical death metal then the new album from Hate Eternal will certainly be one of the highlights of the year.
