REVIEW: Hate Theory - Hate Theory WW3 Music, 2002
6/10
Hate Theory - Hate Theory - cover art Hate Theory is a band hailing from the state of Ohio in the US. With the name of the band and the cover art my first guess was that this was a brutal death metal release. Nine times out of ten my guesses are correct but this time I was wrong, not completely but still wrong. The five guys of Hate Theory play mid-paced, semi-melodic metalcore, something which is not very common. Some people would probably call it sludgecore or perhaps something else but you hopefully know what we are dealing with here. Most of this album consists of heavy driving guitar rhythms that push the music forward accompanied by capable drumming and anguished hardcore screams and gurgles, interrupted by occational speed bursts. The problem is that this album is more than an hour long and even though they sound fresh and interesting for a song or two the whole second half of the album floats together into one single stream of screams and riffs without meaning and substance. Hate Theory are not really bad at what they do, it's just that there is not enough variation shown on this debut album. The most atypical song is the mighty epic "Crawl Alone" which is also the best track of the album. No matter what they will certainly still appeal to some of you who enjoy mid-paced thunderous metal and hardcore screaming. For those of you who don't like hardcore screaming there are also some deep spoken words and more traditional death growls available.
