REVIEW: Haterush - Mark Of The Warrior Black Lotus Records, 2004
7/10
Haterush - Mark Of The Warrior - cover art Haterush may be a new Swedish band but the band members have a lot of experience from the metal genre. The drummer Richard Holmgren used to play with hard rockers Vanessa and bassist Magnus Wall is also known from death metal bands like Abhoth, Godhate (ex-Throneaeon) and Mausoleum. Picking Haterush as band name may suggest musical direction closer to Magnus Wall's previous endeavours but don't fool yourselves. This album is all about fast and melodic power metal with influences mainly from the European school and bands like Helloween and Stratovarius. When the band keeps the speed up they sound more or less like any other band in the genre but once they slow down and start thinking about adding a bit of a soul and feeling to the songs it becomes slightly more interesting. That's their strength at this point and I think they should focus more on developing this particular aspect of their music in the future.

Vocalist Stefan Embretsson does not have the traditional high-pitched voice and I think that is one of the reasons why he has been chosen to front the band. At least his more laid-back singing style will appeal to those who can not stand the other side of the coin. Most of the album still fails to escape the plague of average standard power metal but when you reach midway through you will jump up and down with joy as the wonderful "Titans Will Fall" pours out of your speakers. Even if one single song is not enough for the band to rise the victory flag they are off to a good start and if there is more like that hiding within the creative veins of this young band I will hail them as one of the most promising newcomers of the power metal genre.
