This is my first encounter with the
Canadian progressive metal band Heaven's Cry but they did release a debut
album back in 1996 which was entitled "Food For Thought Substitute" and was
chosen as one of the top albums of the year in the Japanese Burn! Magazine. It
has taken the band six years to complete their second album but now it is
finally done. I would suspect that the band has been put on ice for a while
but I'm not sure about that. I would be making it easy for myself if I were
to compare this band to Dream Theater but the thing is that they have a lot in
common with the mighty DT - they have the same type of guitar riffs (name a
progressive metal band that doesn't...?) and the two vocalists Pierre St-Jean
and Sylvain Auclair often use similar vocal melodies but their voices are far
from the quality of James LaBrie. This is most apparent during the slower and
calmer passages where the vocals become the center of your attention. The band
has also taken some influence from the psychedelic elements of bands like
Atheist and Cynic. The production is not bad at all but I think a progressive
metal band should have sharper guitars than Heaven's Cry do and not sound
that floating. These Canadians are not doing anything wrong and this album is
fairly entertaining but unfortunately it does not sound very new or exciting.
The band definitely sounds best when they play it heavy or fast. It's a
little mean to say this but the best track of the album is the cover version
of Midnight Oil's "Beds Are Burning" even though the original version
sounds better...
