Hedfirst was born in
Poland in early 2000 and have now signed a deal with Crash Music after the
release of a demo called Checkpoint in 2001. I don't know much about the
European department of the label but it seems like they could put some more
effort into their promotional activities. The promo sheet not only lacks a
decent biography of the band but it does not even have a url for the band's
website. That may seem unprofessional to some but what is more important is
that it will be interpreted as if the label is more interested in promoting
themselves than the band. Another thing is that the label wants to make it
clear that "not since Vader has there been such a strong band coming out of
the death metal underground in Poland". Sure, I admit that there are death
metal influences in the music of Hedfirst but there are also plenty of
hardcore and this is a modern metalcore band and nothing else. Perhaps it's a
marketing trick but in that case it is so obvious that it's ridiculous. If
not, then the label shows itself ignorant towards the music that they are
there to promote. Either way I can't really understand their way of
reasoning. Hedfirst is still a pretty good band and they are not like most
other metalcore bands out there. Instead of just focusing on raw energy and
power like many do the music on their debut album is also melodic and
atmospheric which is something that I appreciate. If you enjoy borderline
bands between death metal and hardcore with a heavy metal groove then Hedfirst
may very well be something that you could grow to love. The album ends rather
abruptly but it is nice while it lasts and despite the fact that there are no
songs that stick out from the rest it is a decent and even debut
release.
