REVIEW: Hell Within - Asylum Of The Human Predator Lifeforce Records, 2005
8/10
Hell Within - Asylum Of The Human Predator - cover art Hell Within is just another name being thrown into the melodic death/metalcore uprising. With metalcore quickly sweeping the states, it's not hard to find another release similar in style. The debut Hell Within CD isn't anything really impressive, but it obviously stands out in the crowd.

The music is blistering, tight, and very well performed. The band incorporates breakdowns here and there, but aren't limited to one per song like most bands feel required to do. It seems like this release wasn't written to please anyone, but rather written to sound as great as it possibly could be. While blending screams with some low singing (closely following the melodic chorus needs singing plan), the music seems to broaden with each song.

At first the vocals may bore you, as there really isn't anything special to them, but as the album progresses, you see the range the vocalist has. This CD has it all: Mid range shouting, high pitched black metal-esque wails, singing, there's even some hardcore shouting going on in the track "Redemption...Is A Cold Body" (though said track's singing chorus feels a little weak). The album is just a blistering insanity ride from the moment you hit the play button until the very end.

However, the band definitely has room to improve. While the music is great, sometimes it feels weak, and the vocalist can definitely work on his singing voice a bit. It also suffers from the "every chorus needs singing" syndrome that many bands seem to be coming down with lately. Outside of that, the album isn't as typical as one would think and stands tall in the sea of bands in this style with their heads held high.
