REVIEW: Hellfueled - Volume One Black Lodge Records, 2004
7/10
Hellfueled - Volume One - cover art A debut album titled "Volume One" doesn't exactly make you hope for much imagination and creativity from a band but it's simple and says everything I guess. Hellfueled is a band from Huskvarna, Sweden, that formed in 1998. They have been working hard and have released a long row of demos before being given this chance by Sound Pollution's in-house label Black Lodge. To be honest my first thought presented in the very first sentence of this review was an accurate guess. This album does not shine with much originality but it is still an enjoyable party metal album performed by competent musicians. First off vocalist Andy Alkman is a deadringer for Ozzy Osbourne in his earlier days. Unlike many other vocalists who have tried to impersonate the Black Sabbath legend this man actually succeeds very well and it sounds good all the way through but, like I said, we have all heard it before. Musically they have walked away quite some distance from their early influences such as Entombed and Cathedral, taking on more of a modern rock mixture between stoner á la Spiritual Beggars and dirty rock 'n' roll á la Hellacopters. Nothing exceptional but definitely well done. I particularly enjoyed "Midnight Lady".
