REVIEW: Helltrain - Route 666 Nuclear Blast, 2004
7/10
Helltrain - Route 666 - cover art The Swedish three-piece orchestra Helltrain is one of several new signings to the metal label giant Nuclear Blast. It is a young band but the band members have many years of combined experience in bands like The Everdawn, The Moaning, Scheitan and Gates Of Ishtar. They released a mini album called "The 666 EP" in 2003 through the frontman Pierre Törnkvist's own label Heathendoom Music, which I unfortunately have not heard, but this is their first full-length release. According to Jimmy Pop of the Bloodhound Gang, Helltrain sounds liks Misfits with an attitude and to some extent he is correct in his statement. Helltrain do have a strong punk rock vibe while the vocals are firmly located in the melodic death / thrash division. The song structures are rather simple most of the time and unfortunately the repetition tends to make your mind wander from their music now and then. It is however a very catchy and enjoyable album perfectly meant for a party. Those of you who miss Gandalf may very well appreciate Helltrain.
