Unlike other albums which depend upon technical proficiency or absolute brutality, Zmierzch relies almost wholly upon the ambiance created through the music. In a style which is substantially similar to Summoning, Zmierzch is an epic trek of medieval style orchestration and gloomy black metal guitar passages. Indeed the entire album seems to be a soundtrack more than a normal band release. The orchestration on the album is overwhelmingly prominent and despite being largely synthesized it is remarkably well composed and performed. The rest of the instrumentation, including vocals, are dubbed more to the background producing an eerie echoing quality as though you were imagining this music while walking through a forested valley or over mountains. The guitars and drums are fairly standard and I can think of no stand out tracks where they are concerned, their main task on the album is to build on the already established atmosphere. This is largely the task that the vocals serve as well; they are fairly standard rasping black metal fare. The inclusion of all Polish lyrics also sets this band apart vocally and otherwise from others in the symphonic black metal field, and so far as I know (aside from very early Behemoth albums) from all metal genres. To sum up, this album is tasteful, engaging, and ultimately well performed, it is perfect music to listen to whilst reading or perhaps playing a RPG. I would highly recommend this album to any fans of Summoning or other symphonic black metal bands.
