With continuous college radio airplay of the songs "Hellyeah" and "Matter Of Time", you'd be led to think that Hellyeah is one hell of a straight forward heavy sounding metal band. While blending Pantera-esque riffs with a very Mudvayne sound, this supergroup comprised of members from both bands delievers on only a few levels.
Well, the obscenities are there in abundance on many of the songs, including the title track "Hellyeah" which is quite possibly the best "fuck you" homage ever written. "Matter Of Time" happens to be a very Mudvayne heavy song but stands its own on the album. There's a good deal of heavy songs to follow, but none of them are anywhere near as good as the aforementioned two and sound somewhat similar at times.
Hellyeah obviously tries to be serious for most of the album. However, it's very easy to see that they also wanted to have some fun with it, which is evident on the track "Alcohaulin' Ass", which just sounds like a fun song for when you're drunk. And what album would be complete without a few boring, slower mainstream style songs? Lucky thing there's only two on this CD.
This band is basically just two bands trying to meld their sound into one style, and while sometimes it works, a good amount of the tracks just sound more like a jumbled repetitive mess. While some of the riffs are heavy, you'll find another one quite similar roughly a fourth through the CD. For as impressive as the CD is, its could have been better with a little more variety in the chords and a lack of "ballads". Given the people involved, this should have been a little better then it came out with, but most of the CD can still be enjoyed by all.
