REVIEW: Helrunar - Frostnacht Lupus Lounge, 2005
7.5/10
Helrunar - Frostnacht - cover art “Frostnacht” is the first album from German black metallers Helrunar whose “Grátr” demo apparently received high rates from the media. I must say it´s a quite good debut, certainly. These guys play pure black metal the Norse way, being Immortal or even modern bands as Taake prominent names if I had to name their influences. Traditional raspy vocals, an intense drumming, frozen melodies which hold the torch of the black light every now and then and are the main role in the music. Their care of the melodic side of the songs is praiseworthy. It´s not full speed ahead all the time, Helrunar are more concerned about composing varied songs instead. I heard some clean vocals, but they´re scarce. Nowadays black metal bands usually tend to become boring or uninteresting at the first listenings, fortunately this band stands one step ahead from the mass. Though they haven´t myriads of highlights nor really wonderful moments, this album is very entertaining, and the performance is flawless and professional as hell. The songs are consistent enough to deliver a good dose of blackness through grim metal, and the addition of some elements like accoustic guitars in some passages and interludes makes nothing but elevate the value of the songs. The production is excellent, powerful and balanced, everything is on the right place and it´s something that makes this album sound still better as a whole. Best songs in my opinion are “Frostnacht” and “Älter Als Das Kreuz”. This CD is a very enjoyable and correct piece of black metal, so Helrunar are paving the way for a promising and productive career. Don´t lose their track!
