REVIEW: Hidden - Spectral Magnitude Red Stream, 2002
6.5/10
Hidden - Spectral Magnitude - cover art Hidden is a band that I know nothing about and that is just the way they want it apparently. Red Stream will not give out any information on the origin of the band or any other information on who they are. I respect that, it's just that I find it to be a futile attempt to gain a little more attention. What I do know is that this is the debut album from the band but despite the mystical atmosphere around the band they will probably pass by rather unnoticed unless they focus more on writing memorable songs for their future releases. The album isn't bad at all but it never really takes off which is a little sad because it does have its golden moments such as the wonderful sixth track. The lyrics are very much scientifically influenced which is something that the album cover from Jean Pascal Fournier gives away. The band that comes to mind when listening to the dismal mix of death, doom and black metal of Hidden is the first couple of albums from Katatonia. They have the same melancholic sound and nice melodies but Hidden is a little rougher and doesn't have the same taste for rhythm and song writing that Katatonia did have. A most decent release but I want more from this band in the future. Stand-out tracks: "A Bounded Span Of Time", "Spectral Magnitude".
