The Italian band Hiding
Tower was formed in 1999 in the ashes of another band called Focus. Now they
are unleashing their third demo called "Disappearing World" which is a
concept album about the Turkish invasion of Otranto, a town in the Salento
peninsula, that took place in the year 1480. As the war between Muslims and
Christians keeps going on even to this day the album is right on time you
might say. What I do not appreciate about the lyrical concept is that they
seem to take the Christian's party but I could be wrong here since there is
nothing like that spoken out directly. It would be better if they just told
the story about what happened. Anyway, on to the music. At the moment Italy is
known for, well, power metal, power metal and power metal (with a few fine
exceptions like Opera IX, Cadaveria, Necrodeath and some brutal death metal
bands). Hiding Tower is yet another of these bands but I am glad to see that
they do not just go for the Labÿrinth / Rhapsody copycat sound which so many
others have done. Instead there are more rock influences and progressive
elements displayed on this demo recording. This I like and it makes them more
interesting. Not unlike most other musicians of these bands they possess both
talent and skills when it comes to playing their instruments but in my opinion
they still need to work a little on the song writing. The vocalist Rudy
Martignano has a nice voice as long as he relaxes but when he is going for the
high notes he doesn't have enough power behind. It is definitely a release
fit for the power metal label but it is more laidback and relaxed than usual.
I would like them to continue exploring the progressive side of things but
also to add some aggression here and there where it is needed. Stand-out
tracks: "The Miracle".
