The Italian power metal scene has grown very large throughout the late 90s and there are now a wealth of bands in this genre. Highlord have been around since the mid 90s and after three albums for Northwind Records they have signed a new deal with the Spanish label Arise Records who specializes in melodic metal of all kinds. In the past there are three bands from their label who have made a lasting impression on me - Steel Attack, Asperity and Dark Moor. Now add Highlord to that list. This was actually the first time I heard the band but the wonderful piano intro to this album immediately caught my interest. I have always been weak for good piano melodies as that is one of the most beautiful instruments there are in my opinion. That's not all this album has to offer of course. I don't know about their three previous albums but this is some of the most impressive power metal that has come out of Italy for some time. Most bands from their country tend to sound pretty much the same which does not benefit anyone but Highlord have found their own sound. I especially like the guitar work and the overall guitar sound of "Medusa's Coil". It's a bit heavier than most Italian power metal releases but it is also very melodic and with some progressive influences. I should not forget to mention the vocalist Andrea Marchisio who is also doing a good job. They could have gone easier on the keyboards in a few places but other than that this is a very good album. I'm sure this is not the last we hear from Highlord. At least I hope not. If I had a record label this is definitely a band that I would have signed.
