REVIEW: Hirax - Thrash Til Death (DVD) Black Devil Records, 2006
7.5/10
Hirax - Thrash Til Death (DVD) - cover art Hirax was an L.A. based Thrash Metal band with two Metal Blade releases in 1985 and 1986. After some 15 years of silence original vocalist Katon W. de Pena recreated Hirax with all new members and did some significant touring as evidenced by the bonus footage on this DVD. This is solid if not completely original sounding Thrash that fits in somewhere between Exodus and Suicidal Tendencies. The musicians are certainly competent and Katon's pseudo-Zetro delivery is adequate, but nothing is presented that would single these guys out for maximum exposure or even excellence. What is surprising about this DVD, and not necessarily in a good way, is that the footage from the main show offered here, the second Minneapolis Mayhem Festival, is typically of poorer quality than the bonus footage shown. A lot of this has to do with the lighting and the fact that the main show wasn't professionally shot. Regardless, Hirax displays some primitive and maybe even primal Thrash. I think Katon was ahead of his time in the 80s. Hopefully he can maintain a steady lineup in the current era and bang some more heads in the coming years. Not mandatory but at least there are some bonus features, though my copy had errors rendering some bonus features unviewable.
