Martin Schirenc is perhaps most famous for his work with the
bizarre Austrian death metal bands Pungent Stench who have once again
reformed. His new creation is entitled Hollenthon and although this debut
album of theirs has its musical roots to be found in death metal there is so
endlessly much more to these eight tracks. Although I am not mighty impressed
by his work with Pungent Stench this new creation of his took me with storm.
Majestic song structures, Gregorian chants, ethnic melodies and choirs are
some of the things you will find on your way through "Domus Mundi".
Schirench has been active for a long time now and even though this is
technically a debut album it does of course not sound like an ordinary such.
Even though he composes all the music he is not entirely alone in the band.
With him is Mike Gröger (Raventhrone, Mudbreed a.o.) on drums and his
wife Elena Schirenc who writes all the lyrics and does some vocals with a very
good result. She is also the woman behind the website of Napalm Records for
those who didn't know that already. The most important thing that makes
Hollenthon stand out as a unique band is variation and the use of very
unorthodox song structures and rhythms. There are a wide variety of vocal
styles utilized - clean male, spoken words, clean female, growling, operatic
and everything in between. This album also has some Middle-Eastern rhythms
which are most evident in "Homage" and "Vestige", something that for some
reason would be abandoned on the second release from the band. They even have
some tribal rhythms á la Sepultura as somewhat of an intro to the track
"Reprisal". Hollenthon is without a doubt one of the most interesting metal
bands of the new generation and this is only the beginning. Stand-out tracks:
"Homage", "Premonition",
"Eclipse".
