REVIEW: Homicide Hagridden - Dead Black Sun Eclipse Records, 2004
6.5/10
Homicide Hagridden - Dead Black Sun - cover art An album that smells of Slayer right from the very first second can't go wrong, right? That was my first thought when I heard the title track of this debut album from Italian brutal thrashers Homicide Hagridden. I immediately fell in love with the powerful riffing and the old Slayer-ish guitar sound but once I really started getting into the album I also noticed a few flaws as few albums tend to be entirely perfect. The riffs tend to repeat themselves slightly too often and the drums suffer from the "St. Anger" syndrome which, no matter whether Lars Ulrich and the band's mastermind producer XXX thinks this is a modern and fresh touch or not. Homicide Hagridden are deeply rooted in Slayer's old-school thrash metal but they also blend in death metal influences to give the album a more powerful and brutal edge, especially the vocals are more in line with semi-raw growling and more than once nod in the metalcore direction. Nothing fancy but an enjoyable album for fans of the early Slayer releases. At least check out the title track because it shreds!
