With over a decade of hardcore behind them, Sacramento's Hoods are not just a band, they are an HC institution. In their newest release “The King Is Dead” Hoods still manage to evolve their music somewhat. The aggressive old-school hardcore has a touch of metal that will attract metalcore fans, without scaring the hardcore kids away. The sound is aggressive, straightforward and, as old-school hardcore should be, it is short. None of the tracks clock in at over 3 minutes. “The King Is Dead” is a step forward for Hoods, their best album so far. This aggressive in your face hardcore will make the circlepit flow fast and furious. However, when it comes to the lyrics there are a lot left to wish for. /You turncoat faggot / You fucking punk / Coward/. It does not take a mastermind to write better lyrics than that. I don’t expect bands in this genre to come up with outstanding lyrics or songs that are 4-5 minutes long but Hoods could have added a few more tracks to the album, ten songs in under 20 minutes is a little too short. Still it is a great album and if you love Hoods' old records or bands like Hatebreed and Madball, you should definitely check this out.
