This is the side project of Luathca and Tophetarath of FOG. Something must be amiss in the fields of Fort Wayne, Indiana for such darkness to abound. In all seriousness, this is a studio project that has been self-described as "Punishing Avante-Garde Black Metal in the vein of Abigor, Ved Buens Ende, Beherit, (old) Immortal, and the good ol' days of early Black Metal." If the shoe fits....
My sole complaint here, which is a pretty major one, is that monotony sets in rather quickly. There are 9 old school Black Metal songs here that simply cannot be old school owing to their length. Put differently, these songs are just too long to be effective. Instead of bludgeoning the listener to a blackened death, it’s almost like one is nitpicked to the point of sickness.
Whatever the case, everything here is grimmer – and for the most part less interesting (even the synthesizer cello) – than FOG, plain and simple. The music, the production, the vocals (which at times can be quite similar to Immortal’s Abbath), everything. The drumming sounds distinctly more organic and the bass is often less prominent, but this is pretty intense nonetheless. While American, though you would not necessarily know this if you did not, um, already know it, Hordes of the Lunar Eclipse should easily appeal to fans of old school Black Metal – definitely more so than the parent group, FOG.
