Despite belonging to the Scandinavian area, a long time purveyor region of extreme bands, Denmark hasn´t been as productive as their neighbours Norway or Sweden when it comes to groundbreaking metal bands. Certainly we have Konkhra, Koldborn, Illdisposed and of course Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, but looks like Danes are a bit behind. As you might be wondering, Horned Almighty comes from the land of the Little Mermaid and fine butter cookies and I must say they (the band, not the cookies) are much better than most of Norwegian bands coming forth nowadays. Their black metal has a certain death metal touch and a groovy edge which results on a very enjoyable album, both extreme, aggressive and listenable. The vocals lean sometimes to growls quite à la Swedish death metal but mostly rant on black metal terms, the guitar distortion is low and sharpened, the bass guitar is crucial in the cavalcade conformed by the rhythm section with that swollen roaring sound and the unstoppable drums assembly the warmachine this band is. Songs are cute jewels of violence mostly crafted on mid pace and they flow one after one by the star-dogged moon without no remorse.
Keys to the basic traits of the band are the excellent sound and the groovy guitar lines, among others. Therefore these blokes put a bunch of influences in the cauldron and spicing with their own touch they produce this monster music friendly to the extreme ear though frantic and heavy. Taking a look to the lyrics, each song text is opened by a Bible´s quote. However, as the album title clearly suggests, we´re not before a Christian metal exhibition; a collection of evil hymns comes from the mouth of the singer to make it all clear. “The Devil´s Music “ negative point is in my opinion that songs are much similar to each other. By the way, there is a hidden track in the end of the CD, more or less in the vein of the whole album. All in all Horned Almighty is a competent, clever band to admire and taste. Uh, a last thing, nice cover imitating Albrecht Dürer´s engravings!
