REVIEW: Horrid - Reborn In Sin Deadsun Records, 2002
8/10
Horrid - Reborn In Sin - cover art From the land of Caligula, great food and sparse metal comes Horrid. I myself had never heard of the quintet before throwing this CD on, and was pretty impressed. 8 well-written tracks in the deathrash vein make up "Reborn In Sin", with production reminiscent of The Crown's "Hell is Here". The title track starts off with an eerie clean-picked guitar line, which continues to cycle overtop of the eventually raging rhythm section in a nice dynamic. The guitar work of Belfagor and Alex is prime, with tons of galloping palm-mutes and incendiary melodies; all told very much like a Gates of Ishtar or other comparable Swedish thrash outfits. There is also ample variety by Horrid here, as witnessed in the half-note breakdown of "Your Lying Eyes" and the Autopsy-like riffage of "Evil's Evocation". Vocalist Robert sounds a lot like Peter of Vader, beefing things up well while letting the music flow. "Away From Christ" is another 6-string war, featuring some exceptional riffs and ! structuring. My only complaint would be the lyrics. While the intention is good, Horrid doesn't have the English skills to properly convey their subjectively secular lyrics, and while I agree that this will make them more marketable, writing in their native tongue and/or brushing up on the English might help. That small qualm aside, this is a great album well worth picking up if you want to hear something both new and enjoyable.
