REVIEW: Howling Syn - Forebearers Of Dusk Galy Records, 2002
8.5/10
Howling Syn - Forebearers Of Dusk - cover art I'm getting more and more happy with the neighborhood since I'm discovering some talented musicians amongst them. Recently it was Moonlyght from Quebec now from almost across the street (Montreal) Howling Syn. To top it all off, the record Label is in Verdun and this is my home! Enough geography and on with the record. The music on this cd is really good. Not too heavy or agressive. It has a style that is reminiscent to early Genesis compositions, I mean when Peter Gabriel was their frontman. Back then (for some reason this makes me feel old) this band was very progressive with classical and medieval influences. Peter Gabriel was an enigmatic character and a master of disguise. They were storytellers and were setting some dark and mystical ambiance throughout their compositions. Those were the days.... Anyway, if you are a fan of the "real" Genesis, you sure want to get this one. It contains fourteen songs separated in two chapters, an epilogue and a bonus track. Mr Pigeon composed all this good stuff and plays all instruments besides drum. Lots of variety of styles from classical, medieval, doom, gothic, prog and power metal makes it quite enjoyable and magical. The only weakness is for the vocals and even if they are pretty good are not as strong as the music. On the other hand, they are diversified with a female singer and Mr Pigeon going from spoken words to an excellent death presentation. Two instrumentals are offered and actually the title track is a superb one filled with strong and powerful moments that breathe bravery and shows a very obvious and welcome classical influence. A couple of my favorite tracks are number five and ten. The first one is called "Black Moon" and begins with wolf howling over keys partitions, turning more into a powerful number with nice spooky spoken words, then a doom atmosphere settles in with a dramatic and symphonic mid section. The other one is called "The Reign Of Evil" and has a more medieval feel with acoustic passages but the core is pretty heavy with good percussion and the female vocals are at their best. This band was referred to me by the drummer of Moonlyght and here again we have a very good debut album from a band that deserves a much wider recognition.
