The band known as Hulk is a Belgian trio who play a lively style of stoner rock and roll. Taking an influence from classic hard rock bands such as AC/DC & Thin Lizzy, and then blending this with some more modern desert rock sounds from bands like Queen of the Stone Age or Kyuss, basically gives you the key ingredients in describing this Brussels based outfit. The band states on their website that their mission is to bring the sex and swing back into rock and roll. While this may be an ambitious objective to say the least, Cowboy Coffee & Burned Knives is on the right track, as it is a no frills straight ahead rocker. With a sound that can be dubbed as modern, yet devoted to the roots and spirit of pure 70s rock and roll, Hulk creates a high energy, groove-laden environment.
As a whole the album flows very nicely with a fresh mix of up- tempo rockers, with the occasional bluesy ballad thrown in for good measure. This is not one of those records that you have to listen to over and over again to realize what is going on here, as the songs are straightforward. Yet, even though the songs are pretty simple, there is no doubt that these guys are good musicians. The vocalist, Herr Mayer, blends his voice terrifically with the music, and may revive memories of Bon Scott and the glory days of AC/DC. The guitar work is also noteworthy because the riffs are consistently good and the solos are well placed, without going over the top. Songs like “It’s All right”, “Sweet Love” and “Never Walk this Way” showcase the bands ability at the top of their craft. All in all, from one track to the next, this is really a smooth listen and this is the perfect type of disc to pop in your player if you are going on a road trip of cruising down the highway. As a further proof of the bands caliber, David Catching (Eagles of Death Metal, Mondo Generator) invited the band to the Rancho de la luna studio in the middle of the desert in Joshua Tree where Cowboy Coffee & Burned Knives was recorded. The album features several guest appearances from other members of the infamous desert stoner rock scene. Undoubtedly, fans of bands like Kyuss, Fu Manchu or Nebula will definitely be enjoying this release, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for rockin’ time.
