One-man black metal projects has become quite frequent lately but one-man death metal projects are not as common, or at least it doesn't seem that way to me. Human Taxidermy is one of them though and was created by an American from Fresno, California, named Anthony Roark. Apparently he has been influenced by death / grind bands like Skinless, Dying Fetus and Napalm Death and has put up as his goal "to bring this form of metal to the masses to show them that there is nothing more insane, exciting, or intense". Sure, extreme metal is intense. Extreme metal can be insane. However, extreme metal might have been exciting fifteen years ago but today it takes a lot more than just playing extreme metal to bring excitement to me or the world's metal community in general. If you want it done right you have to do it yourself, right? Well, the problem with doing everything yourself is that there is almost always something lacking in quality as you can not possibly be good at everything. This is also the case with Human Taxidermy. Musically this cd actually offers some nice groovy riffs from time to time, giving you some moments to headbang instead of just grinding through the whole album at 100 mph without any breaks. Unfortunately this is not enough though to make it perfect. The songs are too similar to each other to be really enjoyable from start to end and the growling vocals are not very well done. In fact, I would probably have enjoyed this demo cd better if it had been cut down to half the time, excluding some unnecessary fill-out material inbetween the more interesting fragments. Not bad but nothing that adds to what we already know about extreme metal either.
