REVIEW: Hypocrisy - Catch 22 Nuclear Blast, 2002
8.5/10
Hypocrisy - Catch 22 - cover art While most Swedish death metal have chosen the Gothenburg path with beautiful melodies as the premier goal Hypocrisy chose to embrace the American way of playing death metal. While still maintaining a very thick and aggressive sound Peter Tägtgren and Hypocrisy have always incorporated new elements in their music to stay ahead of most of the competition. This time there is a chance that the Tägtgren, who is still one of the most important metal personalities in the world, have gone a little too far in his will to experiment. You probably already know of his side "project" Pain and the new Hypocrisy album have been infected with some influences from the other band. Some of the fans will probably be a little disappointed with this and I have already seen the album being pretty much discarded by the Swedish Close-Up Magazine. I don't really agree with this though. Sure, there are plenty of experimenting with both vocals and song structures on the new album but the Hypocrisy aggression is still there. While the previous album was more symphonic and melodic in its nature this one is more aggressive and experimental with straight-forward riffing instead of keyboards. Hypocrisy have changed and I also kind of miss the old sound but this is still a very good album that I think would satisfy most old fans of the band and also gain them a few new ones. Standout tracks: "Destroyed", "Another Dead End".
