REVIEW: Hypocrite - Edge Of Existence No Fashion Records, 2000
8/10
Hypocrite - Edge Of Existence - cover art From Sweden, the home of melodic death metal, hails a band named Hypocrite and guess what they´re playing: melodic death metal! This is a re-release of the legendary debut album from the band and was first released self-financed in 1996. In that very year the band signed a deal with the Italian label Off World and in 1998 they signed with the Swedish No Fashion Records. Swedish death metal is not only Dark Tranquillity, Opeth and In Flames which this album clearly proves. It starts off slowly with an angelic keyboard intro to illustrate the front cover musically and then it all explodes with raw growling vocals, brutal riffing and catchy melodies. Close to 50 minutes of highly technical metal shows a band full of musical talent and creativity and kind of makes you feel sorry for the people who lived a hundred years ago and didn´t have a chance to enjoy this kind of music. The remarks you could have on this album is that the growling vocals aren´t first class and it doesn´t bring anything really new into the world of metal. However, good melodic death is, and always will be, good melodic death and this is definitely among the best in the genre. The number of beautiful melodies and brutal riffs on this album makes it deserve a place in your record collection.
