REVIEW: I-(def)-I - A Curse Beneath The Surface Self-financed, 2005
7/10
I-(def)-I - A Curse Beneath The Surface - cover art Since the band I-(def)-I started playing together in Manchester 2001, their tight and heavy songs has given them a loyal and growing fan base. The sound is melodic, violent and groove laden and the whole thing lands in a mix of nu-metal and hardcore, with clean vocals that add a touch of Incubus here and there. The self-financed demo “A Curse Beneath The Surface” is just another confirmation of that this band is capable of delivering quality metal. The opening track “When Venus Sends A Black Rose” holds high class with down tuned guitars and passionate vocals. The epic and atmospheric “Suface Tension” is pure angst and anger converted into beautiful melodies and heavy riffs. The singer, Chris Mahar, has got the voice for brutal screaming vocals as well as for clean vocals and he does it all with great skill. Recently I-(def)-I were signed to Casket Music and a mini-album, “Bloodlust Casualty”, will be released in February. It’s a little surprising that it took so long for them to get signed, but now it is done and it will be interesting to listen to their upcoming release. This is a band that has a lot of potential and I expect them to go far.
