REVIEW: Ice Ages - This Killing Emptiness Napalm Records, 2000
5.5/10
Ice Ages - This Killing Emptiness - cover art This one man band is the creature of Richard Lederer. I feel like I'm listening to the Dark Vader on synthesiser when this cd is on. Every sound that can be heard here are electronics and give out a rather dark atmosphere to the opus and this right from the beginning. The vocal parts are full of special effects and somewhat too much in the background making them hard to understand. Besides it might have been good for a few songs but gets boring when used all the time. It's a good thing that the lyrics are written but even here, not for every song, which is kind of strange. The keyboard driven music is reminiscent to sombre Tangerine Dream and is actually the part I enjoyed the most on this album. On the negative side is the percussion. Whenever it's on and especially when stronger, some kind of annoying distortion is used or at least heard, making it sound like a real bad recording or production job was done. When the Dark Vader sings and has strong percussion at the same time, it destroys partly the good dark key partitions. I'm not impressed and actually disappointed that this product was a Napalm release. This should have been issued as a mini cd with these three good songs: "This Killing Emptiness" (by far the best piece), "The Last Time", "Shades Of Former Light". This way, I could have said: "We have a good Dark Vader mini cd".
