REVIEW: Iced Earth - Days Of Purgatory (2CD) Century Media, 1997
9.5/10
Iced Earth - Days Of Purgatory (2CD) - cover art Iced Earth is one of the oldest American heavy metal bands who are still around and even though they started out as a rather modest outfit under the moniker Purgatory (anyone got the album title yet?) they later became the leading American power / heavy metal band of the late 90's. This double cd is a compilation disc that includes material that the band has written from 1986 to 1994. The songs have been re-mixed and the drum and bass tracks have been re-recorded for some of them. All in all they sound more modern and fresh than the original versions which makes the overall impression more powerful and this is the way Iced Earth should sound. If it had only been the first cd I would probably have given this release a 10 out of 10 rating because here we find some of the most amazing heavy / power metal that this world has ever seen. It is the absolute best of Iced Earth with the unique guitar work from Schaffer and the characteristic sound of the band. Another person who is very important to the band is of course the vocalist Matthew Barlow. Without his voice and Schaffer there would be no Iced Earth and we are all very lucky to live in a time when we have the chance to experience such wonderful music. If you have yet not heard them they could be described as un updated modern version of Judas Priest in their prime. The second disc is not far from perfection either and it is such a pleasant experience to listen to an album like this. Iced Earth is living proof of the fact that hard work often pays off in the end. It took the band seven years before they released their debut album. Stand-out tracks: too many to mention...
