REVIEW: Iced Earth - Horror Show Century Media, 2001
10/10
Iced Earth - Horror Show - cover art Iced Earth is finally back with one of the most anticipated metal albums in a long time. It has been three years since their last real album "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (not counting the "Melancholy EP" or "Alive In Athens") but these valiant warriors of true metal are now back again stronger than ever before. This new album almost features a metal dreamteam with names like Steve DiGiorgio (Death, Testament, Sadus) and Richard Christy (Death, Control Denied) and of course also the older members. The most important members are however Jon Schaffer and Matthew Barlow - Jon with his unique and sharp guitar playing and Matthew being one of the most powerful and charismatic vocalists in metal history. "Horror Show" is the most ambitious album from the band so far and it takes the listener on a journey through history to meet some of the most feared phenomena ever, from werewolves through Damien (the devil's emissary in the Omen movies) and The Mummy to the magnificent grand finale "The Phantom Opera Ghost". Jon Schaffer even plays the mandolin on this album and it also contains a good cover of one of the best instrumental songs ever namely "Transylvania" from the debut album of Iron Maiden. "Horror Show" is now THE magnum opus of concept albums.
