Iced Earth, the in my opinion number
one American power metal band today, is back in the game again. After Jon
Schaffer´s Demons & Wizards project with Hansi Kürsch the band has now
finished their new concept album called "Horror Show" which will be released
in spring or early summer this year. The line-up has been completed with no
others than drummer Richard Christy (Death, Control Denied) and bassist Steve
DiGiorgio (Death, Control Denied, Testament, Sadus). This promises for an
amazing album and a new golden future of Iced Earth. Awaiting the new album
Century Media has now taken the decision to re-release this EP which was first
released a couple of years ago as a 5-song EP in the US only. That version was
printed in a limited 1500 units numbered by hand. This new European version
contains seven tracks, three of them being covers namely Shooting Star (Bad
Company), Electric Funeral (Black Sabbath) and The Ripper (Judas Priest).
Colors is a previously unreleased live version from the Alive In Athens
session and the rest of the songs are taken from their previous albums. The
cover versions are pretty well done although I must admit that the originals
are better, Electric Funeral is really in need of Ozzy´s unique voice to
sound any good. By this I don´t mean that Matthew Barlow is a bad vocalist, in
fact his deep powerful voice is one of the most important components of Iced
Earth, making them unique and different from all the Europower acts. The rest
of the tracks are older ones from the band and I´m glad to see that they
included a new live version of Colors, one of my favorite Iced Earth songs
ever. This is a must-have for the hardcore Iced Earth fan but the rest of us
would probably want to await the new album which will probably be a
killer!
